We have been working hard this winter, digging through the inventory, and we are pleased to share with you a tasty selection of past vintages in this year's SuperBottle sale! Touchdown!
THE SCOOP ABOUT SCREW CAPS: Among the treasures this year, you may receive a bottle with an unusually colorful top. These bottles represent ten years of research that George Hendry has been doing on the subject of closures.
You may know that at Hendry, we always use the closure that is appropriate for the wine and the winemaking. Historically, we've found that some bottles require a screw-cap closure to protect them from oxidation and keep them fresh and bright, such as the Albariño or the Unoaked Chardonnay. Others—most wines aged in barrel here at Hendry—are better served by a cork, which allows a miniscule flow of oxygen to continue to polish and soften the wine over time. If the winemaking is finished: screw-cap closure; if it needs to evolve: cork closure.
If you’ve been following the global Screw Cap vs. Cork battles at all, you may also know that about a decade ago, some screw-cap producers, such as Stelvin, began introducing lines of closures with precise levels of oxygen permeability, attempting to match the permeability of cork. Thanks to this evolving technology, select screw-caps can now mimic the effect of corks on aging. Ever curious, George was keen to experiment with them on a small scale. At each bottling, a few cases of our flagship wines were sealed with an array of these new closures. George has been checking in on them periodically for the better part of the last ten years.
As part of the 2022 SuperBottle inventory sale, these brightly-colored special closure bottles will be sprinkled in among the familiar cork closures. Think of it like an Easter egg hunt! The sale prices on all of these delicious vintages—in both closures—represent an incredible value, and there are plenty of hidden gems among them.
