2013 Merlot

The Hendry Vineyard is located on bench lands west of the town of Napa.  The vines grow on thin, stony clay soil between 200 and 300 feet above sea level.   Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate the climate.

Hendry Merlot is planted in blocks 13A, planted to clone 3, and 13B, planted to clone 14.  Block 13B is our oldest Merlot block, planted in 1995.  In 2013, budbreak for the Merlot occurred on March 28th, bloom on May 10th, and harvest was on August 30th, with a yield of 5.54 tons per acre in Block 13A and 2.57 tons per acre in Block 13B.

Each year, we pick our small blocks of each of the Bordeaux varietals and ferment and barrel age them individually, each according to its own recipe. After approximately one year of barrel aging, we determine a unique formula for our RED blend based on the characteristics and quantities of the vintage.  This wine was aged 15 months in French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which were new.

Saturated ruby color.  Herbal, smoke, cocoa and berry aromas.  Medium body.  Smoke, leather, berry and cinnamon spice on the palate. Firm tannins that will give this wine versatility with richer foods and sauces.  A rich reduction sauce with any dish, accompanied by well-browned scalloped potatoes, or even a steak au poivre, would be a tasty match for the flavors in this wine.
