The Hendry Vineyard is located on benchlands west of the town of Napa. The vines grow on thin, stony clay soil between 200 and 300 feet above sea level. Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate our climate. Our vineyard, which has been home to the Hendry family since 1939, is the sole source for grapes for all of our wines.

Each year, we pick each of the blocks of Bordeaux varieties and ferment and barrel age them individually for approximately one year. After this first round of barrel aging, George Hendry creates a blend to make the best use of the components and highlight the virtues of the vintage. Our aim is to make a wine with a concentrated and balanced palate, complexity and longevity, but with softer, more approachable tannins than our 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2015, median budbreak in these blocks was March 13-29th, and bloom was between May 5th and the 22nd. Veraison occurred July 21st to August 4th, and harvest took place between August 26th and September 19th. These wines were aged for a total of 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 70% of which were new. Deep, opaque purple color. Initial aromatics are subtle—this wine will benefit from decanting, especially as it warms from cellar temperature. Spice, sweet tobacco and plummy berry fruit on the nose, with some earthy elements. Easy, silky and bittersweet on the palate, increasing in berry fruit and palate depth with air. Fine-textured, firm tannins make this wine easy to drink, and versatile with a wide variety of hard cheeses. Also consider grilled meats, especially lamb chops, hearty stews and other moderately rich dishes.
