2014 Merlot

The Hendry Vineyard is located on benchlands west of the town of Napa. The vines grow on thin, stony clay soil between 200 and 300 feet above sea level.  Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate the climate.

Hendry Merlot is planted in blocks 13A, planted to clone 3, and 13B, planted to clone 14. Block 13B is our oldest Merlot block, planted in 1995. In 2014, budbreak for the Merlot occurred on March 14th, bloom on May 11th, and harvest was on September 3rd, with a yield of 3.8 tons per acre in Block 13A and 5.2 tons per acre in Block 13B.

Each year, we pick the Bordeaux varietals and ferment and barrel age them individually, each according to its own recipe. After approximately one year of barrel aging, George Hendry decides on the blend for our RED blend based on the characteristics and quantities of the vintage. In some years, we choose to bottle small quantities of the individual components separately as well. This wine was aged 15 months in French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which were new.

Ruby color. Bright berry fruit on the nose, with smoke, leather and meaty aromas. Medium body. A core of berry fruit, spice, cocoa, berry, cola, bittersweet chocolate and herbal flavors on the palate. Just enough tannin to give the wine structure and a solid backbone for pairing with medium-weight dishes, or lovely by itself. This wine will be a versatile food pairing partner with everything from hard cheeses and hearty fall risottos to roasted sausages and potatoes year-round.
