The Hendry Vineyard is located on bench lands west of the town of Napa. The vines grow on thin, stony clay soil between 200 and 300 feet above sea level. Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate our climate. Our vineyard, which has been home to the Hendry family since 1939, is the sole source for grapes for all of our wines.
Each year, we pick our small blocks of Bordeaux varietals and ferment and barrel age them individually. After barrel aging, George Hendry creates a plan based on the quantities harvested and tinkers with the final blend to make the best use of the components and highlight the virtues of the vintage. Our aim is to make a wine with a dense, balanced palate, complexity and longevity, and gentle tannins, something with a very different flavor profile from our 100% Cabernet Sauvignon which is more dense and packs a powerful tannic punch for long-term aging. These wines were aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 70% of which were new.
Mouth-watering cassis, smoke and pepper on the nose. Saturated purple-ruby. Velvety entry, fine-grained, gentle tannins. Brown sugar, meaty spice, and dark fruit, with cedar and cocoa. This wine has elegance and balance. Delicious! George recommends a hearty pot-roast or beef bourguignon, but this wine could be your go-to for anything from roasted rack of lamb with plenty of garlic and herbs to prime rib.
