The Hendry Vineyard is located on bench lands west of the town of Napa. The vines grow on thin, stony clay soil between 200 and 300 feet above sea level. Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate our climate. Our vineyard, which has been home to the Hendry family since 1939, is the sole source for grapes for all of our wines.
Each year, we pick our small blocks of Bordeaux varietals and ferment and barrel age them individually. After barrel aging, we create a plan based on the quantities harvested and George Hendry finesses the final blend to make the best use of the components. Our aim is to make a wine with a dense, balanced palate, complexity and longevity– and something with a very different flavor profile from our 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines were aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 70% of which were new.
As is typical for this blend, which leans heavily on Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the color is opaque purple-ruby. Eucalyptus, and spice on the nose. Sweet, dark fruit, with cedar, cocoa, eucalyptus and spice elements. The firm tannic structure benefits from decanting, and will richly reward patient cellaring. Cab-lovers will enjoy this appealing wine with firm but unaggressive tannins. George recommends a hearty pot-roast or beef bourguignon.
