The Hendry Vineyard is located on bench lands west of the town of Napa. The vines grow on thin, stony clay soil between 200 and 300 feet above sea level. Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate the climate.
The Hendry RED is a Bordeaux-style blend with an attitude adjustment. Each year, we pick our small blocks of Bordeaux varietals and ferment and barrel age them individually, each according to its own recipe.
After barrel aging and before blending, we determine a unique formula based on the characteristics and quantities of the vintage. George Hendry is aiming for a “respectable” wine, with good palate density, balanced fruit and tannins, and longevity, that tastes very different from our Cabernet. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 70% of which were new barrels.
Beautiful berry and blackcurrant on the nose, underpinned by the spicy, forest aromas of the oak. Medium-full mid-palate with more pretty berry and currant flavors, and the substantial tannic grip we’d expect from a young Bordeaux-style wine. A good candidate for cellaring.
